The FailZero EXO nickel boron coating is applied to every contact surface of the bolt carrier group using a proprietary electroless process that bonds the coating to the metal at the molecular level, producing a surface harder than chrome and more slippery than PTFE. The EXO coating is self-lubricating, reducing friction between the carrier and upper receiver and between the bolt and barrel extension without relying on oil to maintain smooth cycling. This is particularly valuable in .308 and AR-10 platform rifles, where the higher chamber pressures and larger case volume generate more carbon fouling per round than a 5.56 NATO load.
