The gas tube is the component that routes propellant gas from the barrel’s gas port to the upper receiver, where it impinges on the bolt carrier key and drives the cycling sequence in a direct impingement AR-15. Gas tube length must match the gas system of the barrel — carbine, mid-length, pistol, or rifle — and using the wrong tube length prevents the rifle from functioning correctly. A mid-length gas tube routes from a gas block positioned approximately 9 inches from the breech face. Mid-length gas systems offer a gentler gas impulse and longer dwell time than carbine-length systems on comparable barrel lengths, which results in softer felt recoil and reduced bolt carrier group wear over time.
